Wow, hard to believe it's here already! Nearly two years ago I was enjoying dim sum with Jeff, and he mentioned he'd like to do the Alcan someday... having been a follower of the event since I first read about it in AutoWeek and Car & Driver in the mid-80's, I told Jeff that the Alcan was on my list of must run events and if there was room I'd love to join his team... and now here we are, less than 48 hours from the start of one of the last great automotive adventures still around. Here's a little background info on me, I'm originally from the Puget Sound area and learned to drive out on the great rally roads between Auburn, Black Diamond and Enumclaw. However it wasn't until I moved to Goble, Oregon (a suburb of Rainier) that I started to rally when a coworker invited me along on a Cascade Sports Car Club Friday Nighter in 1988. After a few years I learned that European-style Stage Rallies were happening here in the Northwest and I was instantly hooked. I worked a few events, was service crew for Bob Wakehouse/Todd Terp and their Fiat X1/9, and landed my first co-driving spot with Simon Levear in a Datsun 510, which lead to co-driving for most of the Tabor clan, most often with Mark. A couple of memorable highlights from the past 20 years:
- Finishing second overall at the first Edge of the Rock stage rally on Vancouver Island with Simon in his 510
- Running the 30th Anniversary NorWester Rally with my dad in my SAAB 900
- Running Satch Carlson's Rally of the Lost Patrol with Dennis Gunn in his Audi 4000
- Running the 1998 Press On Regardless also with Dennis Gunn
- Running the first No Alibi TSD with Tony Dienstel in his Acura Integra
- Winning the first of several Production class Divisional championships with Jon Tabor
- Winning our class at the 2004 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with Mark Tabor
- Winning the 2004 SCCA ClubRally Production National Championship with Mark Tabor
Can't thank our sponsors enough, Mitsubishi for providing us with a pair of Outlanders which helped us land the rest, Columbia Sportswear, Hankook Tires, BajaRacks, ProDrive, Halton, KC Hilights, and the rest. I also need to thank those that have supported me and my crazy obsession over the years, my parents Verne & Linda Poirier, my grandma Vy Poorman, and my wife Lawana. Stay tuned, it's sure to be an amazing adventure! Next update, news from somewhere north...
