April and Marcus with Car 1 at ThunderbirdThe Thunderbird rally started off on Saturday with 39 entries. However, not every car finished. Team Mitsubishi started in the middle of the pack as car 14.

On the second leg of the day, we came around a hairpin right to see that there were 2 cars piled up in the snow banks with the crews frantically trying to dig them out with snow shovels. No suprise we saw cars off in the ditch as the snow was extremely slick and underneith it was nothing but ice covered ground. At one point the outside thermometer in the car read as low as 19 degrees F!

During the next stage, we noticed that car 15 was missing from action because they never pulled up behind us at the end of the leg. Come to find out, they also ended up in a snowbank around a hairpin corner along with car 17 right behind them.

After a long grueling day of driving in the snow, we can rest. With only having 2 hours of sleep the previous night from arriving at the start location at 2:00am, concentration throughout the day seemed to be a major obstacle.

But it was worth it! The scenery was spectacular! In fact I almost followed it off the road! The competitors were all in good spirits and the day went smoothly. We only ran into traffic 3 times which slowed us down. Unfortunately, all three times we had traffic was around a hairpin corner with a checkpoint location in the middle of the corner.

Sunday brings on the 2nd day of competition with 8 more hours of driving on the ice and snow. We won't know how we did until the end of Sunday. But with 12 other competitors in our same class, it will be a challenge to stay on top of the game and on top of the road.
